Firefighters battle structure fire despite high winds

HILL CITY, SD — At approximately 8:53 p.m. Tuesday evening, the Hill City Volunteer Fire Department, along with other agencies, responded to a structure fire in a detached garage on the 200 block of Pine Avenue in Hill City.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the structure burning in heavy smoke conditions and spreading to the roof and the immediately adjacent residential structure.

Despite wind gusts of over 50 miles per hour, Hill City volunteer firefighters kept the initial structure and adjacent residential structure burning.

No injuries among civilians, pets or firefighters were reported.

The Black Hills Fire Chaplains Association, Hill City Super 8 Motel, and the Red Cross serving central and western South Dakota are assisting the occupants.

Other agencies responding to the fire include: Pennington County 911, Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Hill City Ambulance Service, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Black Hills Energy, Black Hills Fire Chaplains Association, American Red Cross Serving Central and Western South Dakota , The Super 8 Motel in Hill City.
