Smyrna Fire Department personnel bring structure fire under control

Smyrna Fire Department (SFD) personnel were dispatched to a structure fire in the 8000 block of Minehead Drive at 7.11pm last night.

Upon arrival, A-Shift SFD attacked and extinguished the fire, containing the damage to the exterior wall and attic. The two occupants were not at home at the time of the fire.

The SFD fire investigator’s preliminary investigation indicates that the cause and origin of the fire was the grill, which had been used earlier in the evening and was stored against the structure.

“Staff did an excellent job of containing the fire,” SFD Chief Bill Culbertson said. “We are grateful that the occupants were not injured and were only moved temporarily.”

The Smyrna Fire Department encourages residents to review the National Fire Protection Association’s safety tips for grilling:

  • Propane and charcoal barbecues should only be used outdoors
  • The grill should be placed at least 10 feet away from the house and anything that can burn
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or grease buildup on the grates and in the under grill trays
  • Never leave your grill unattended
  • Always make sure the lid of your gas grill is open before lighting it
  • If using starter fluid with a charcoal grill, use only charcoal starter fluid; never add liquid charcoal or any other flammable liquid to the fire
  • If using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container
